What's the best free photo editing software?

I have just got a HP photosmart 4480 printer and i would like to know, what's the best free editing software? I mainly want to freshen up and if possible enhance some old Black & White / Sepia photos. I am new to this and wondered if there's any better software, other than that which came with the printer. Any advice would be much appreciated.

  1. GIMP and Paint.net are good free programs.
  2. Gimp 2 does wonders.
  3. Programs like WinGIMP and Paint.net are good, but can be overkill -- hard to use and tweak images with, sometimes. A quick-and-easy way to get similar results -- or even just to get some idea what the end results of using the fancier packages MIGHT be -- is to use the simple image-editing capabilities within the free utility IrfanView: http://www.IrfanView.com The lower half of the "Image" menu contains several useful items, including "Convert to greyscale" and "Auto-adjust colors" -- both of which work well enough for me that I rarely need anything more complex. It can even use some Photoshop plug-ins. It's a good idea to get and install the IrfanView plugins package, too. 4. I would say Gimp is a good one, but it is pretty complicated to use. http://gimp.org/ Some sites for Gimp tutorials: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/ http://gimp-tutorials.net/ http://gimp-tutorials.com/
